Transports in Ireland

Ireland is a country easily accessible by air. The small size of the Irish territory facilitates journeys throughout the country by bus or train. In addition, most cities have good public transportation networks.

Airports in Ireland

Ireland has several airports, including three main ones offering international flights: Dublin, Cork and Shannon.

The Ireland West Airport in Knock (County Mayo) provides flights between Ireland and the United Kingdom. Both Kerry (south-west of the country) and Donegal (north) have a very small airport that mostly provides local flights.

Buses and trains

Bus lines are highly developed in Ireland and represent the best quality / price ratio for moving from one city to another. Keep in mind that Ireland is a small country that is easy to cross. Two and a half hours is enough to reach Galway (west of the country) from Dublin (east end). The two main companies, present all over the country, are Bus Eireann and Citylink.

However, you can find other companies that are sometimes cheaper. For example, Go Bus operates only on the Dublin – Galway route but offers a slightly lower fare than Bus Eireann and Citylink.

A train network is also implemented in Ireland. It is called Iarnród Éireann and serves the whole of Ireland. However, this means of transport is a little more expensive and does not necessarily save time on long journeys. The website of the railway network is the following one:

Getting around towns and cities

With the exception of Dublin, public transportation system are made of buses only. In each city and town of the country you will find bus lines of the national company Bus Eireann and local lines specific to each municipality. The price of a bus ticket is most of the time around 2 €.

In Dublin, you will not find Eireann Bus but a Dublin Bus network serving the city and its surroundings. The capital also has two tram lines which are not connected. The tram is called Luas  and its two lines are Red and Green.

It is important to note that taxis are very well implemented in Ireland. You can find them everywhere, at any time of the day/night, even in small towns. This offers the possibility to go drinking at night time without taking any risk nor spending too much money.
